Nextfest 2021: Nature Exploration Storyteller Submission Call

Call for Storytellers Interested in Nature

Nature Exploration (title TBD) is looking for Storytellers interested in creating & sharing their own stories, or who would like to lend their voice to other’s stories.

The Project

Nature Exploration is an auditory & transcribed ‘choose your own adventure’ which integrates knowledge-sharing, story-telling, and natural discovery. A guided nature wander shared via short podcast-like episodes of around 10 min each, the project shares stories based in nature while engaging the audience in the often-overlooked urban wilderness that surrounds us. Short episodes will be themed with topics like “wild edibles”, “songbirds”, “invasives”, “water” and will include connection with open source materials like edible fruit maps and species identification… though the exact topics and formats are subject to the Storytellers engaged.

Nature Exploration is open to stories of all kinds; non-fiction, traditional, creative, instructional… if it comes from nature, it belongs.

Nature Exploration is created partially in fulfillment of Sam Jeffery’s outreach and service project for Canadian Conservation Corps Stage 3.

Storytellers will be offered a share of the project’s budget ($300) reflecting their commitment to the project. 100% of the project’s budget will go to the Storytellers.

How to Apply

Send a brief email to Jeffery.SL@gmail.com with the subject “Storyteller Submission” and the following:

  • Your name

  • How to contact you

  • What kinds of stories do you want to tell? What interests you about nature?

  • Are you interested in creating stories, lending your voice, or both?

Applicants will be invited for a (virtual or phone) informal chat and vibe check to get to know each other and your storytelling.

Nature Exploration is created in amiskwaciwâskahikan – preference will be given to Indigenous Storytellers and with a commitment to the 35//50 Initiative.

Storytellers do not need to own recording equipment to participate. Recording will be done in line with Nextfest’s Covid Safety protocols and artists’ comfort, with working and recording remotely being default.

If you have any questions or ideas you’d like to bring forwards, please reach out to Jeffery.SL@gmail.com

Please note we can only engage emerging artists as defined by Nextfest Arts Company:

  • any artist within the first ten years of their career

  • an artist who is NOT represented by any organization or union (ACTRA, EQUITY, IATSE, PGC, DGC, ADC, etc.)

  • an artist who is NOT represented by an agent or agency

If you are interested but do not fall into this category, please reach out anyways – there may be future iterations!
