Nextfest 2020: Call for Emerging Choreographer
We’re in search of an emerging choreographer to create a new work for Dance at Nextfest 2020, June 4- 14.
Who can apply?
Dance at Nextfest is geared towards emerging choreographers and movement artists under the age of 30 who are pursuing a professional career in dance.
Who will you be working with?
As choreographer, you will be working with a group of 15 to 25 dancers from Victoria School for the Arts to create a new movement piece.
Artistic mentorship and guidance will be available to you from a valued artist in the community. Attendance at all of your rehearsals will be expected.
What does the creative process involve?
Rehearsals will run Monday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:00 pm on the following dates:
March 30
April 6
April 20
April 27
May 4
May 11
You will need to be available for all of the above rehearsals and the technical and dress rehearsals (exact dates TBA, likely between May 31- June 3, 2020)
Where will you rehearse?
Studio space will be provided at Victoria School for the Arts.
What kind of payment is there?
You, the choreographer will be guaranteed a minimum honorarium of $400 for the creation and presentation of your work in Nextfest.
How do you apply?
To apply as a choreographer for Dance at Nextfest 2020, please send the following information to becky@goodwomen.ca:
- Statement of interest – Description of work/ why you would like to create new work to be mentored and presented at Nextfest
- Artistic Statement – Describe your choreographic style and interests
- Link to online video documentation – Video footage of the proposed work is preferable. This can include in-studio rehearsal footage. Documentation of previous work can also be submitted. Please send a video link—do not send a hard copy.

When is the deadline to apply?
January 27, 2020 at 11:59pm (MT)
Late or incomplete submissions will not be accepted.
When will you know the results of your application?
You will be contacted by February 10, 2020
