Call For Submissions – The Transcendent Function (Workshop and Performance)

As part of Next Fest 2020, re:create Theatre is producing the first iteration of its process-oriented workshop in Character Mask and Individuation: The Transcendent Function.

We are looking for emerging artists (artists in the first 10 years of their career) with a background in Clown and Character Mask. Having taken formal classes/workshops in the Pochinko method of Character Mask (or similar practices) will be a great advantage, but all submissions will be considered.

Overview of the workshop:

Using Viola Spolin’s Theatre Games, Richard Pochinko’s Clown and Character Mask, and other movement and devised practices, the purpose of this workshop will be to build a healthier relationship with our inner voice/editor/harsh critic/personal shadow. A large part of the work will be holding space for one another so that we can do the necessary work to commune with potentially challenging parts of ourselves. Artist-participants will be invited to take a step into what CG Jung called the process of individuation, by exploring similarities between Jung’s process and Pochinko’s method.

Specifically, the artists will be asked to explore and create characters from their editors, or out of Jung’s archetype of their personal shadows. Guest instructors will be invited in to provide insight and training on key parts of the process including Character Mask and decolonizing Jung’s writings. There will be one performance slot for this workshop during the festival to show what we’ve built together.

Workshop guide Philip -pH(Lin)- Hackborn lives at the intersections of race identity, queerness, and madness. They are looking for artists of all identities, backgrounds, expressions, and abilities. The more intersections you live at, the more they want to share this work with you.

Please include in your submission a brief detailing of your experience with Clown and Mask, movement, improv, and devised theatre. Also, include any details of your identity/background that you feel comfortable disclosing. If there are any boundaries you feel you might face by participating, please share your concerns and anything that can be done to assuage these challenges.

Workshops and rehearsals are projected to take place during weekends of April and May, so please include your weekend availability for those months and the performance date in early June will be decided soon.
